# Editorial Standards and Commercial Independence

Editorial Standards and Commercial Independence Our Position A university ranking is only as valuable as the trust readers place in it. That trust is not earned through the elegance of a methodology, the breadth of a dataset, or the polish of a published table. It is earned through one thing above all: the assurance that every position in the table was reached through evidence and analysis alone — never through negotiation, and never through money. This page sets out, in plain terms, how our ranking is funded and the structural safeguards that ensure funding can never influence it. We publish this statement in full, in every edition, and we hold ourselves accountable to it. The Principles

Assessment and revenue are structurally separated. Rankings are produced by our editorial and research teams, operating under published methodological rules. Commercial relationships are managed by an entirely separate business function. No member of the commercial team has access to unpublished scores, and no member of the research team has any commercial incentive attached to the outcome of the ranking. The two functions report through different lines of management, and neither may override the other.

All rankings are produced exclusively from publicly available data and a published methodology. Every position in the table derives solely from the inputs described in our methodology: verifiable, source-traceable data obtained independently of the institutions themselves, combined according to weights that are published in full. The composite score for every institution can be recomputed by any third party from the public documentation. Because the arithmetic is transparent, no position can be quietly adjusted — there is simply nowhere for an adjustment to hide.

Access to the ranking is free for everyone. The ranking is published openly and at no cost. An institution that pays us nothing sees exactly the same table as one that purchases every product we offer. There is no members' version of the table, no advance access to favourable framing, and no embargoed briefing that differs from what the public reads.

Commercial products license a rank; they never confer one. Where institutions choose to license the use of their position — in marketing materials, communications, or recognition programmes — they are licensing a fact that has already been independently established. A licence to display a rank is akin to a licence to display a certification mark: it reflects an outcome arrived at before any commercial conversation began. No product we sell can improve a position, protect a position, or secure entry into the table.

Pricing is public, uniform, and non-negotiable on position. Commercial terms are standardised within each category and published without variation. There are no bespoke arrangements, no discretionary discounts tied to ranking outcomes, and no bundled agreements in which commercial commitments are linked — explicitly or implicitly — to editorial treatment.

Every institution has the same right to be heard. Any university, ranked or unranked, may challenge the data used in its assessment at no cost. Where a factual error is confirmed, it is corrected, the score is recomputed under the published methodology, and the correction is logged publicly with its date and nature. Where a challenge concerns a judgement rather than a fact, we respond with the methodology and the evidence base. Corrections follow the same transparent process for every institution, regardless of commercial relationship. Why We Publish This Rankings shape decisions — where students apply, where academics accept appointments, where partners invest. Readers are entitled to know not only how the numbers were produced, but what commercial relationships surround them. We believe the only defensible answer is the one set out above: revenue is earned from the audience the ranking's credibility attracts, and never from the ranking's outcomes. Any departure from the standards on this page should be reported directly to our editorial leadership. Every complaint is logged, investigated, and answered. These commitments are supervised by the Editorial Standards Office, which reports to the Managing Director of Podhium and is empowered to:

Audit any stage of the production pipeline, including retroactively;

Suspend publication where a breach is suspected, pending resolution;

Commission an external audit of methodological and commercial separation, the findings of which are published in summary. Any suspected departure from this policy may be reported confidentially to the Editorial Standards Office. Every report is logged, investigated, and answered in writing. Where a breach is substantiated, the correction is published with the same prominence as the original table. The Bottom Line We are funded by the audience our credibility attracts — readers, data subscribers, and institutions licensing results they have already earned. A ranking that can be influenced by money is not a ranking. It is an advertisement with a methodology attached. That is a product we decline to make.
